Obama Money and the Entitlement Society

Last night I was watching a video on Youtube that turned my stomach.  The video was a clip of a news report from last October in Detroit.  Rumors had circulated around the community that $3,000 stimulus checks were available for people facing economic hardship.  Free money!  Thousands of Detroit residents flocked to the Cobo Center in the hopes of receiving some housing assistance or free money.  It was estimated at one point that there was over 15,000 people standing in line for help.  When I watched this video I couldn’t believe that we as a people have steered this far off course.  Over the years, we have become an entitlement society that is more willing to fight over the scraps handed out by the government than carve out our own piece of the American Dream.  How could we have reached this point?  I mean after all our Founding Fathers set up a limited government that was suppose to feed the entrepreneurial spirit and can-do attitude of this country.  How could it come to this?  People willing to settle for scraps…crumbs.

I started to wonder what I did different in life so I examined the path I followed.  Let’s see, I came from a lower middle class family.  I completed high school.  I got my hands dirty working low paying, back breaking jobs to earn enough money for my first car.  I enlisted in the military because I did not expect my parents to pay for my college education.  I completed my bachelor’s degree and made a career out of the military at the same time, finally retiring from service after 23 years.  I’m now looking at a number of colleges for my master’s degree program.  Oh and I did get a pretty good paying job after my military career.  My wife and I live within our means.  Our home is very modest and affordable.  So what did I do different?  Well, I made different choices in life.

I was raised by parents that believe people make their own luck with hard work and determination.  They taught me the simple lesson that there’s never a free lunch.  If I wanted to succeed in life, the stage was set for me to do just that in this wonderful country.  I grew up with an appreciation for the United States and all the opportunity she offered; such as with all things that are worth it in life there are risks and rewards.  I took some risks by leaving the safety net of Mom and Dad and venturing out on my own.  But through those risks I did earn my rewards.  These rewards cannot be measured by money or power; they are measured by depth of my character and integrity.  I decided that I wanted the better things in life and that the better things could not be found in a government stimulus check.  The better things can only be found in each of you.  And they are discovered by the choices we make each day.  This is not some hidden secret or magic formula that has been kept from the masses.  It is simply the way it is supposed to be here in America.  I am not entitled to what you earn or what you have acquired.  I am entitled to what I have earned and what I have acquired.  So why is this such a hard concept for left to grasp?  Well the truth will set you free.

It’s because the left needs you to be dependent on them.  They need you to stay below the poverty line.  They have no intentions of lifting you up; they need to bring the successful to you.  They do this by taking from them and feeding it to you.  They promise you free money that grows on money trees or Obama money from his stash.  The gap eventually closes between the middle class and poverty level and soon there are only the rich and poor.  They of course are the elites and you are their subjects because they feel the need to take care of you.  After all they know what’s best for you.  Have you ever wondered why the Democrats who claim to be the champion of the poor don’t want the poor to have a chance at a better education?  I mean shouldn’t we all be pushing for educating our citizens so we can compete globally?  Well here is the truth as I see it.  The reason they don’t want school choice for you because they need you uneducated. Your child actually may recieve a solid education in a private school.  An educated citizen is a dangerous threat to their utopian ideology.  You know the same utopian society they have created in Detroit; a Detroit that has been run into the ground by Progressives Democrats since the 1960s.  They feed you with propaganda each day telling you how the government is going to make it all better and over time you begin to believe their lies.  Many buy into the idea that they can never break free from their suffering without government help and fall under their spell.  After all it’s a lot easier in life to take what is perceived as the free ride.  But the truth is nothing is free.  You give up a piece of yourself and liberties every time you take that free ride.

The progressives take more from you in terms of freedom and liberty.  They tinker and restrict the same free market system that has created more millionaires than any other in the world.  The free market system that is the one tool that can help you break free your current economic woes.  When was the last time you heard of a rags to riches success story about someone dependent on the government?  I can’t think of a single one.  But I can think of countless success stories by people who took risks and made good choices in life.

Sometimes in order to succeed in life you need to feel pain and failure, because we learn that those are not desired states.  Don’t follow the path of the Detroit residents standing in line fighting for the scraps.  Because in the end the scraps are for the garbage and none of you are garbage.  You are citizens in the greatest country in the world!  Start acting like it.

How do you propose to make such schools accessible to the POOR? Don't say they need to get rich first — if they aren't educated, how are they gonna do that? Do you want to triple or quadruple the pay for less "brain"-intensive jobs?
