Back to the Basics

Today I was talking to a few people about the economy and the current mess we’re in.  The conversation eventually flowed towards the Founding Fathers and the Constitution.  Before I knew it they were all tuned in to my words and listening attentively.  I was recommending one of my favorite books, “The Miracle of The 5,000 Year Leap” when it hit me just how starved these good people were for information about the Constitution and the Founding Fathers.  Most of them were quite a bit younger and I could see in their eyes that what I was telling them about liberty and property rights seemed like a new concept.  I asked them how much were they taught about the Constitution in school.  Most of them shrugged their shoulders.  I then asked them what they thought of the current political climate in Washington.  Again most of them just shrugged their shoulders.  For a moment I stepped back from the discussion and listened to them talk.  One guy pulled out a pencil and asked me for the name of the book I had recommended, while another just sat quietly taking it all in.
As I drove home from work I couldn’t shake from my thoughts the conversation I had with these folks earlier in the day.  I began to think about the upcoming elections in November and how some of these guys will go to the polls and vote without even knowing the basics of our Constitution.  They will vote believing the lies they have been bombarded with through deceptive ads and political rhetoric.  They will fall for the distractions and side shows that are part of an election year.  The political current will carry them wherever it flows.  Without knowledge they will not have the necessary tools to make an informed decision.  Without knowledge they will not be able to recognize a candidate that understands and is willing to defend the Constitution.  And even if the conservatives win this November and we vote them in just to check the Democrats, then the only thing we will win is a slower demise and in the end we will gain absolutely nothing for our republic.  How have we reached this point in our republic?  Why have we allowed our rich patriotic history to be watered down to the point where we don’t even have an understanding of the basic document that protects our unalienable rights?
The more I pondered these questions, the more I realized that I had failed to do my part.  I allowed progressives free reign in our educational system without speaking up.  I failed to teach my nephews and nieces about who we are, where we came from, what we fought for, and how sacred liberties truly are to the individual.  I left our children’s education to an inept system that is overrun by ideologues without a single word of protest.  I sat by and said nothing when radical left wing groups demonized capitalism and the free market that drives it.  For a short time I fell asleep at the wheel, but that’s all it takes to crash.  I accepted responsibility for my lack of action about six months ago.  I refused to be part of the problem anymore.  Since then I have been writing and calling my representatives.  I have been talking to anyone that is willing to listen about our Founding Fathers and the Constitution.  I have been recommending books and working on this blog.

I have come to realize that it’s really not about the political parties, because I now know that unless we reeducate and reintroduce ourselves and our children to our Founding Fathers and the Constitution there will be no saving our republic.  Both parties are destroying our great nation with their unquenchable thirst for power and money.  Both parties are slowly stripping our liberties away one crisis at a time.  When the people once again decide to stand up and embrace the Constitution hope will be restored.  When they gain a firm grasp and understanding of its meaning and why it’s such a remarkable document, then real change we can believe will take place.

"Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness". Today, the word "pursuit" is missing, most think that happiness is a right and many look to the government to provide it. The founders knew that was outside the scope of government so happiness was not stated as a right only the pursuit of happiness was guaranteed. Great post and we do need to educate more about what our founders gave us and how we are losing those liberties each day.

    Thanks for the comments Ron,

I really believe that the only way we can save this country for future generations is to get back to the basics. And it starts with the person in the mirror.

Great article, John. All too often, we forget how our country was founded and what it was founded on. Thanks for reminding us.
