Jan Schakowsky: The Constitution through the eyes of a progressive

Last week I heard the below radio interview with Illinois Representative Jan Schakowsky and I didn’t think it got the play it warranted.  It was an interview in which she was talking about the Tea Party movement and their love for the constitution.  Before I go any further I want to introduce you to Representative Schakowsky with the help of discoverthenetworks.org.

Born in Chicago in 1944, Schakowsky grew up in that city’s Rogers Park section. After graduating from the University of Illinois in 1965, she worked briefly as a schoolteacher. In 1969 she established National Consumers Unite, a consumer-advocacy group that led a campaign to imprint freshness dates on food packaging in stores. From 1976-1985 she worked as a director of the Illinois Public Action Council, another consumer-advocacy organization. In 1985 she became Executive Director of the Illinois State Council of Senior Citizens, where she was employed until 1990. In 1990 she was elected to the state legislature.

When Democrat congressman Sidney Yates in 1998 announced his retirement after having served 48 years in the House of Representatives, Schakowsky used her political connections to defeat a veteran state senator in that year’s Democratic congressional primary. Then, buoyed by the efforts of some 1,500 activist workers and a $1.4 million donation from EMILY’s List, Schakowsky proceeded to easily win the general election in the heavily Democratic district.

Schakowsky today is a member of the Democratic Progressive Caucus in the House of Representatives. The Almanac of American Politics describes her as “an outspoken progressive, one of the leftmost members of the Democratic Caucus.”

“I don’t think I can be defined as too far left in a district like this,” says Schakowsky, who once told a writer for the local Democratic Socialists of America (DSA): “The American people are not ideological; therefore, the way to go is to attack private power.” Schakowsky once received an award from DSA, which is the chief American arm of the Socialist International.

So as you can see she is a solid progressive with socialistic tendencies so it shouldn’t surprise anyone with the position she takes towards those Tea Partiers and the constitution they so love.  Listen to the below radio interview and I think you will see what I mean.

You can hear how she mocks the Tea Party movement and their desire for a limited government that stays within the parameters of their constitutional authority. The interviewer appears to agree with her. At one point she calls them “tenthers.” I’ll be honest it makes me sick to my stomach to know that there are people like this in our government with the power to legislate. The constituents from District 9 should be ashamed of themselves for continuing to reelect this constitution hating representative.

Just this past Sunday she was questioned about the constitutionality of ObamaCare. Take a look at the below video clip.

As you can see she has very little respect for our constitution.  Her viewpoint is shared by most of the progressives in the House.  She is a progressive first above all other things.  She is running against Republican challenger Joel Pollak in a district that is heavily Democratic so she will probably be reelected.  However I contend that the position she has decided to take in regards to our constitution goes beyond party differences.  She has made it clear that individual liberty and freedom means very little to her and this should send chills up any freedom loving American regardless of political affiliation.

These progressives must be voted out of office.  They stand against our constitution and our republic.  The people from her district need to wake up and realize that she doesn’t represent their interests; she represents the interest of the progressive movement that has a chokehold on our constitution.  If we continue to reelect these people then we deserve the government we get.

Liberty forever, freedom for all!

She is a full blown socialist……With a mental disorder!

The constitution means nothing to people like this. In the first video you can actually hear the contempt in her voice when she talks about the constitution and the 10th amendment–as if you can pick and choose which amendment you care to follow.
In the second video she shows her ignorance of the constitution–not knowing that one of the specific enumerated powere is building post roads. People like this–who have such a disdain for the document that we were founded on–are dangerous to our republic. We can't get rid of them fast enough.

I have to agree with Steve. You could hear in her voice how much she despises the Constitution. She really doesn't like the idea that the government governs by the consent of the people. Anyone who thinks like that is a danger to America and the very foundation on which it was established and built.

Where does it say in the Constitution we can pass Civil Rights legislation?!?! WTF, is she insane? Like 3 Amendments in a row? 13, 14, and 15(all passed by republicans with huge democrat opposition) Why aren't people calling her out on this? Must explain why so many democrats filibustered the civil rights acts, they thought they were unconstitutional.

  • Woodsterman (Odie) October 12, 2010 at 7:30 AM

The Democrat voters don't care in Chicago. They see the "D" in front of her name, on the ballot, and that's all they know … sheeples !

It's not just Schakowsky's contempt for the Tea Party or for the Constitution that's so annoying.

Her hatred for the individual that does well on his or her own, without needing a hand-out from one of Jerky Jan's favorite nanny-state bureaucracies, is poisonous.

I'd love to see her kind reduced to a 10 percent voting minority in this country. If we could peel off some of the prog-tards and make them see the error of their ways (unlikely I know), that would be a huge win.

I'm ashamed to be Polish, lol

  • John Carey October 12, 2010 at 7:42 PM

She definitely could be Randy. She appears to lean that way in a big way.

  • John Carey October 12, 2010 at 7:49 PM

I'm with you Steve. These people are extremely dangerous to the Republic and constitution and must be stopped. The only way we can do this is by informing the misinformed and forcing them to face the truth.

  • John Carey October 12, 2010 at 7:52 PM

Most progressives do despise the constitution Larry. It stands in their way of complete control. We need to drive these people out of Washington and back into the shadows or completely expose their flawed ideology for what it is.

  • John Carey October 12, 2010 at 7:55 PM

She really doesn't care Fleeceme. The ends justify the means. Whether the constitution authorizes it or not, it simply doesn't matter to these people.

  • John Carey October 12, 2010 at 7:57 PM

Unfortunately Odie they don't have to be from Chicago. I can think of a district in San Fran that is the same way.

  • John Carey October 12, 2010 at 8:02 PM

We need to keep working it KS. If we could just have the debate in an open forum we could convince a large number to peel off. The problem is these progressives don't want the debate because they know they are holding a losing hand in the eyes of Americans.

  • John Carey October 12, 2010 at 8:03 PM

    Thanks for stopping by Toyin.

  • John Carey October 12, 2010 at 8:04 PM

No need to be ashamed RR…she's the useful idiot. You're on the RIGHT side.

  • Teresa October 12, 2010 at 8:04 PM

She's a socialist. She should be kicked out of office for not adhering to the Constitution. And, for not even caring about the Constitution at all. Democrats in Chicago need to wake up and realize that they are getting used by the likes of Schakowsky.

  • John Carey October 12, 2010 at 8:08 PM

I agree that she definitely has socialistic tendencies, but ask yourself which is worst; the position she takes or the fact that she gets reelected every 2 years. I'll choose the latter.

  • Matt October 12, 2010 at 10:19 PM

You were right to cover this one John. And you analysis is spot on. You can just hear the hate in her speech. She definitely does not like the Constitution, or the ideas on which it is based.

  • theCL October 12, 2010 at 10:19 PM

You know, it's only the left who ever talks about "the rich." Weird, isn't it?

"She's a socialist. She should be kicked out of office for not adhering to the Constitution."

Yes, along with the remaining 543 that don't adhere to the Constitution.

I do it all the time, hang my arguments on the Constitution, but as the great Joe Sobran said, "The U.S. Constitution poses no serious threat to our form of government." Funny, but true.

If you think about it though, the Constitution was a breach of everything the Revolution was about. It destroyed the confederation and created a much more powerful central government. A government that has grown into the behemoth it is today, with powers more vast and consequential than King George III could have ever imagined.

King George III was a piker compared to our federal Leviathan.

The Declaration of Independence, our creed, is what matters most.

  • Maggie Thornton October 12, 2010 at 10:26 PM

When she said "the way to go is to attack private power" that was a hint. I bet you're the only one to catch that John.

She obviously hasn't given any thought to the Constitution for years, if ever and the interviewer had her on the roads.

John, I agree that the fact she is re-elected every two years is appalling. These are the kind of posts we need to expose who they really are – down deep. Barack Obama has shone the light of Socialism and worse on these people.

  • John Carey October 13, 2010 at 6:34 PM

Thanks Matt. She stands for everything I'm against.

  • John Carey October 13, 2010 at 6:42 PM

I agree that she should be removed from office CL. I also agree that all the abuses in regards to the Constitution that Patrick Henry was worried about has come to pass. This is why the states need to call an article V convention. One of the first amendments proposed should be an amendment that allows the states to repeal any law passed by the federal government it views it as unconstitutional and beyond the parameters of their enumerated authority. The second would be the repeal the 17 amendment and give the states back their power in appoint senators instead of popular vote. Oh how I wish we had the courage to do this.

  • John Carey October 13, 2010 at 6:44 PM

Thanks for the words Maggie. It is time for the conservative movement to rise and wash these people out of office no matter how long it takes.
