Thank You to all Veterans from a fellow Veteran.

It was a hot July day in 1986 when I decide to change the course of my life.  I had spent the previous year in college racking up a bunch of personal debt not knowing what I wanted to be when I grew up.  It was an empty and unfulfilling feeling that clung to me.  I decided that if by the end of the school year I was still unsure of a major to pursue, I would look into the military; that decision point was one that would lead to the most challenging and rewarding experience of my life.  It was the point when I made the decision to walk away from the college campus and enlist in the Air Force.

My plan was simple enough; learn a trade in the military and get out after four years.  What I didn’t count on was getting swept up by something that was bigger than me or my plans; something so powerful that it changed me from the inside out.  In 1987 the Cold War was still the game being played and I was assigned to Ellsworth AFB, South Dakota; an appendage of Strategic Air Command (SAC).  For the first time in my life I felt like I was part of a team that was playing not to win trophies or titles, but playing to secure something more precious, liberty and freedom.  SAC’s motto was simple “Peace is our profession.”  We were the tip of the spear and the shield that stood ready to protect America from a nuclear attack.  We were the reason the Russians didn’t sleep at night while our citizens slept soundly knowing we were ready and able to respond to any attack 24/7.  We worked long hours, played hard during our off time, and stood with each through the good and bad.  It was during this period that my own plans changed.

You see I began to see things differently.  It wasn’t about me, it wasn’t about my plans; it was about America and each of the fine men and women that defends her.  These are people of strong character that I had the honor and privilege of working with.  They are to this day people of the highest caliber and the best of the best that America has to offer.  For 23 years I worked with these outstanding patriots.  I witnessed their selfless sacrifices and worked their long hours in a job where success was measured by an unwavering deterrence that kept the forces of darkness at bay so that Americans could live free.  These men and women became my brothers and sisters, my family.  Your actions and efforts have not gone unnoticed by this retired old veteran.  I salute each and every one of you and thank you for your service.  Because of you America is strong, America is exceptional, and America is and always will be the land of free and the home of the brave.

God Bless you and God Bless America!

For you:

Liberty forever, freedom for all!
