The circle of dictators – from King George to King Barry

In my life, I have been called many things, most often of a pejorative nature (not sure if this speaks more about me or my detractors). But one moniker that has always stuck in my craw has been the fascist label. Being a libertarian that believes in the individual, I believe the use of the term fascist to demean true conservatives is wholly misplaced. My guess is this speaks more to the ignorance of liberals than to the difficulty in defining what truly is fascism.

When we think of fascist governments, what first comes to mind is Hitler’s Germany, and Mussolini’s Italy. This is why the left love to call Republicans Nazis, wrongly assuming right thinking individuals desire a fascist government. Let’s analyze what fascism is and see how mislead they are about American conservatives.

Robert Paxton, in his book, The Anatomy of Fascism, defines fascism as:

a form of political behavior marked by obsessive preoccupation with community decline, humiliation or victim-hood and by compensatory cults of unity, energy and purity, in which a mass-based party of committed nationalist militants, working in uneasy, but effective collaboration with traditional elites, abandons democratic liberties and pursues with redemptive violence and without ethical or legal restraints goals of internal cleansing and external expansion

To be sure, some of the preoccupations Paxton lists can be attributed to conservatives, but all of them can be listed as progressive “issues”. When liberals aren’t bitching about tax-cuts, they are always bitching about the failure of our inner-cities, the “victims” of America, and no group likes to make more “cults” of unity and purity than the left (La Raza, NAACP, CAIR).

The only claim the left has for calling conservatives fascists is our love for the military and our patriotism, which in the past has often been used by fascist dictators to unite their countries. But conservatives do not see the military as a vehicle for political gain, we see it for what it truly is, the defender of our Constitution. And we don’t see love of country as a reason to exclude outsiders, in fact, we welcome immigrants as long as they accept America is not the crappy country they came from (and shouldn’t try to make her that way) but a destination for freedom seeking peoples who desire a better life that only America can provide.

This leads us to how the traditional left-right political spectrum fails. Traditionally, the right on the spectrum are described as reluctant or fearful of change, and desire to “go back” to some form of government that existed prior. The left on the spectrum are described as desiring change, and seek to “move forward” to some form of government not yet tried. These definitions do not define American philosophy in any accurate nor usable way.

The right, in our desire to go back, actually want to go back and then stop at one form of government only, the most liberal and ground-breaking form of government the world has ever seen, the original American Republic. We don’t desire a one-party government ruled by military elites with total state control of the people by demolishing the concepts of individualism and personal responsibility. In fact, we desire the exact opposite. We want a small government that allows the individual to prosper by taking risks that he will be held accountable for.

Conversely, what has the left always desired? In one style or another, some form of dictatorship. Whether it be the dictatorship of a king, or the Fuehrer, or the Commissar, the progressives always go full circle from one dictatorship to another. The original liberals who founded our great nation were battling the original progressives when they desired a government devoid of a king; a government where the individual reigns supreme. Where business is allowed to prosper, not made to prosper by an overly restrictive state that picks the winners and losers. Where the military is used to protect the people, not keep them under the heel of the elite.

Obviously, back in the day, the peeps seeking to maintain the status quo with England were not called progressives, but they possessed the same mindset. They believed the unwashed masses were too ignorant and meek to be able to rule themselves. They feared the mob mentality of the people if America declared its liberty from the King. They failed to see (or they saw perfectly well) the unwashed masses were too ignorant and meek mainly because the ruling elite and the King kept them that way. And the ruling elite and our defacto king’s of late are doing the same thing.

The American Constitution is a singular stop of individual freedom on the merry-go-round of dictatorships that has been humanity’s typical desire for governance. Where have we been heading? Towards a socialist style dictatorship with hints of fascism. Everyone is a victim. American patriotism is bad, but multiculturalism is king (I like to call it world nationalism). State control is the only solution to the injustice of “the system”. Class warfare dictates the people and companies who employ us are evil, and in some cases, “the government running all your companies”, to quote Maxine Waters. The left has called for making President Obama a dictator, which if you haven’t noticed, he is acting like already, thanks to a wool covered Congress who conveniently forgot they are supposed to be the counter-balance to an overly aggressive Executive.

Our Constitution works, if you don’t ignore it. Unfortunately, the progressives have been seeking to change what it means since day one, and if that is unsuccessful, using any means necessary to subvert it. If we actually lived by that document, the ills currently plaguing America would not exist. But if we did that, then we would be living in the antithesis of the liberal dream, a country where the individual is the most important and the collective is rarely considered. A country where the least important person is the President, and the Congress only works a few months out of the year, because their freaking job is truly not that important and should be part-time. But we have been convinced that governing us is a full-time job that only lawyers and doctors can accomplish – that you must be a Rhodes Scholar or Harvard Law Professor to understand the complexities of the extremely simple system the Rhodes Scholars and Harvard Law Professors made complex.

Not only have we been convinced of such, we now demand it. We can’t stomach a “regular” person becoming a politician, because they aren’t smart enough, or savvy enough. Put in other words, they aren’t an aristocrat. We the unwashed and meek masses demand an aristocrat to lead us. The liberals have convinced a large portion of this country that politics is for a special group of people only, and the average stupid American should stay out, unless it is to vote (unless you are in the military), and then if we don’t vote the correct way, they re-affirm how stupid we are.

We are moving headstrong to a socialist dictatorship, coming full-circle once again. Old school monarchies are not much different than any other form of dictatorship excepting the passing of power to progeny (although North Korea is proving this statement false). The people were kept in check by an abusive police (TSA,DHS,ATF,FCC), laws were passed at the whim of a single man with no regards for the people, taxation was oppressive, and the aristocrats were often exempt from the system. Can anyone argue America is not already more than half-way there?

So yes, conservatives do want to “go back” to an old system of government, but it is wrong to say it is out-dated. In fact, I would argue if anyone wants true “change” in this world it is us conservatives. We desire the one form of government that was designed to cherish the person, not the people in power. All the other activists for change want to take us to a much older form of government, dictatorships, which have been around since man decided to live among one another.

If you want change you can believe in, rise up and demand that the real America please stand up. Enough of the phony aristocrats telling us the republic is dead and we need “to move forward”. Moving forward is just taking us through the back door of socialism.

I visit a hard left, progressive site in which the guy speaks the communist talking points while pretending to be a distraught American who has nothing but the welfare of America in his heart.

    To quote:

Yes, we liberals were quite civil in our dissent during Reagan’s first two years. How unlike the openly hostile, right-winged, paranoid, delusional, tea-brained, birther, Red baiting, Fox fueled, Beck-confused, Limbaugh-lying disapproval displayed by millions of Americans who think Obama is a Muslim.

Not to be outdone he throws around the Fascist tag with a flair that keeps Fred Astaire nimble on his feet:

This cult is nothing short of a Fourth Reich, strangling our democracy by seizing near total control of highest bidder elections, and three corrupted branches of government. This will not be pretty. They will hurt people…again.

The American Fourth Reich is still destroying our freedom and democracy from within. We must fight them by calling them what they are, fascists.

Do not be deceived by the guile of the hard left progressives……they are angry, hateful and communists who would radically…not fundamentally change America and they need to be countered at every turn……….

Including local cities, towns and city halls.

Well said sir. For a year, I have always written “progressive” in quotes. To describe our self described “progressives” as actually advocating progress is ridiculous. They seek to return us to a more dependent and tyrannical state. Our system of individual freedom is far more advanced.

Good one Collin. I actually enjoy it when some idiot calls me a fascist. It shows me an attackable ignorance to exploit in order to undermine the rest of the junk that they might spew.

I have to admit, I never understood the difference between fascism and socialism (not much actually) but that is sort of the beauty of blogging, it is a learning opportunity. Inherently, I always felt that socialism and fascism were siblings, or at least close cousins, because they are so similar. One can argue the philosophical differences till the cows come home, but in practice they are almost identical in nature.

What a great post Collin, I really don’t have much to add to it, you said it all. But I couldn’t agree with you more when you said:

“The only claim the left has for calling conservatives fascists is our love for the military and our patriotism, which in the past has often been used by fascist dictators to unite their countries.”

This is something that I have thought about many times in the past; the fact that Hitler used national pride to come to power in Germany, and how conservatives pride ourselves in patriotism. When the left calls us fascists this was the one issue that I could look at and find anything close to a justification to their claim, but you nailed the difference perfectly!

Thanks. Yeah, the liberals have made it a sin to be proud of America. Amazingly they have no problem with their hero worship and the cult of personality surrounding Obama, which in my opinion is much more disturbing than loving one’s country.

Excellent first post Colin. I’m glad you joined the team. My question to you is how do we cure this leftist progressive disease that is eating away the very foundation of our republic? What steps do we need to take to expose their tyrannical ideology and convince 51 percent that they’re are marching us towards tyranny and away from the liberty and freedom?

    • Colin December 21, 2010 at 5:17 AM

I think the first step all conservatives must take is to force an understanding on the American people at large that the liberals have wrongly made us believe we are the minority. We are not, almost all polls show the American people is much more conservative than liberal – the difference is most people are not vocal about their feelings, and conservatives generally are pretty meek when it comes to “shouting it from the rooftops”.

My first step in accomplishing this is to become a “super-patriot”. I will not be forced to feel ashamed for loving the greatest country the world has ever known. Us conservatives must break out of this malaise, to quote Carter, that the progressives have forced us into, where the narrative is, “America is dead”. She is not! And she still has millions who love her, we just need to make people feel it is okay to do so again.

We must start locally. I always advocate writing to the opinion page in your local newspapers and teaching your children about the virtues of America. Talk to friends and neighbors but above all else I believe its essential for liberals to understand that liberals are not evil……

Progressives are. The problem is that by design the progressive agenda is using the liberal democratic party to get its agenda in place by embracing much of liberalism while corrupting it with their own evil that warps and distorts.

If we attack liberals we are failing to distinguish the two. Liberals are patriotic Americans who love the country just as much as we do…..progressives are communists…there is a difference between the two and if we attack liberals they are going to push back and embrace progressivism when its not in their interests to do so.

“The only claim the left has for calling conservatives fascists is our love for the military and our patriotism, which in the past has often been used by fascist dictators to unite their countries.”

The call of nationalism and the pride one feels for his own nation. The concept of American exceptionalism must be called into question.

The KGB station chief who defected back in the 70′s put it very bluntly when he said that the concept of nationalism must be taken away from the opposition to deny them a push back against their agenda.

Is not nationalism-that devotion to a flag, an anthem, a boundary so fierce it engenders mass murder-one of the great evils of our time, along with racism, along with religious hatred? These ways of thinking-cultivated, nurtured, indoctrinated from childhood on-have been useful to those in power, and deadly for those out of power…..Howard Zinn…Progressive guru.

Nationalism is the force that stands in the way of the progressive agenda. Along with GOD.

They must remove nationalism and GOD and when they have done so then there is nothing left to push back against. It is simply as simple as that.

I certainly do not believe anyone should be labeled as fascist, just because they love their country. Pride in one’s country is a good thing, for the most part. This is especially true if one lives in a country such as the United States. Does that sound like I am prejudiced towards America? Maybe so, but that’s the way I feel. Even with our faults, we are still the greatest country on the face of the earth.

I think it is natural to be partial to one’s own country, we are just lucky that ours happens to be America, there is much to be proud of.

  • Linda December 21, 2010 at 2:23 PM

Yeah, the big historic difference between communism and fascism is that the former is more of a global type endeavor, while the latter puts the national identity “uber alles.” But they are both dictatorships.

I love how the collectivist left can slam us on the right for being both “anti-government” and “fascist.” Hello, huh? Stupid collectivists.

The only claim the left has for calling conservatives fascists is our love for the military and our patriotism, which in the past has often been used by fascist dictators to unite their countries.

Something the modern conservative needs to be acutely aware of is the difference between nationalism and patriotism. Too often today, conservatives fall into the nationalist camp. This is dangerous and self-defeating. Patriotism is a love of one’s country its land, traditions and people. Nationalism is a love of one’s government, “right or wrong.” A patriot wants his country to be a blessing to God, a nationalist wants God to bless his country. A patriot places the individual above the government, a nationalist places government above all. Patriotism is beautiful, nationalism is a legitimate critique. Nationalism is collectivism.

Good points. If it is possible, I was both a patriot and a nationalist when I was a child. I was taught to never question authority – chalk it up to the naivete of traditional conservative parents (not to knock my parents, they are good people). Over time, and this was hard for me, my distrust for the government grew. At first, I felt extremely guilty about this, almost like I was betraying my country. Of course now I understand trusting what this government has become is a true betrayal of what America used to be.
