SENTRY JOURNAL’s ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas

John Carey

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
politicians were stirring, even this mouse.
The bills that were passed were crafted with care,
stealing liberties, and freedoms, while calling them fair.

Democrats charged full steam ahead,
while visions of a lame duck danced in their heads.
Grandma Pelosi opened with the sound of a rap,
laying the ground work for a Republican trap.

When out of nowhere there arose useless chatter,
for extending the Bush tax cuts suddenly mattered.
Away with the deals and partisan clashes,
it was time to come together against the will of the masses.

Out of control spending continued to grow,
as Congress passed bills without any dough.
When, what to my wandering eyes should appear,
but old political games crushing holiday cheer.

With a crusty old man, so conniving and slick,
I knew in a moment this wasn’t St Nick.
Brittle and frail this old man with his glasses;
It was he who promoted the warfare of classes!

“Now, Kerry! Now, Schumer! Now, Boxer and Franken!
On, Feinstein! On, Conrad! On, Pryor and Lincoln!
To the top of the capital steps and into the senate hall!
Now charge ahead! Charge ahead! Charge ahead all!”

As time ticked away on this lame duck session,
politicians scrambled to seize more of our possessions.
They extend Bush tax cuts with bipartisan support,
increasing our debt and adding more pork.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the news,
the Omnibus spending bill was up for review.
Republican Senators shouted no way no how,
we’ll force you to read the whole bill aloud.

The Dream Act was next on Harry’s long list,
but GOP opposition caused it to miss.
Later that day “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” was repealed,
a military gift that would force them to deal.

Obama proclaimed he would not be satisfied,
until the Senate produced a START treaty ratified.
He stalled his vacation to ensure it was saved,
then Republican Senators one by one caved.

The last thing to do to finish their actions,
was to pass a funding bill quickly with no distractions.
From now until March the government can run,
and with that passage the 111th was done!

They packed up their goods, trinkets, and treasures,
the damage they’ve done has yet to be measured!
With a wink of an eye and a twist of his head,
Harry gave his assurances that the lame duck was dead.

The lesson for all in this Christmas season,
Is that politicians act without rhyme or reason.
So I offer to you this lighthearted poem,
and the best gift of Christmas – they’ve finally gone home.

Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!
