Video: The Emperor moves towards the center

Tonight we’re going to sit back an watch a skilled speaker spin a tale and try to convince us that he’s really not that radical.  He’s going to tell us that he cares about jobs and that we must do more to help create jobs, even though he spent the first two years of his administration ramming socialized medicine down our throats and nationalizing the banks and auto industry.  He is going to tell us that a new era of bipartisanship and civility is at hand, even though that during the last two years he and his party have engaged in mean spirited rhetoric aimed at the right and has refused to listen to any Republican proposals on major pieces of legislation.  He is going to tell us that we must doing everything possible to make the United States energy independent and yet his policies and regulations are closing down coal mines and off shore drilling.

He is going to say one thing and yet all his actions tell us he is something else.  His EPA is pressing forward with cap and trade.  His FCC is ignoring a court ruling and the congress, taking steps to regulate the internet.  He tells us we need comprehensive immigration reform and yet refuses to secure our borders.  He continues to claim that he promotes free market principles while his policies have opened the way for an unprecedented wave of government interference in the private sector.  He claims to be one thing and yet his actions paint quite a different picture.

I recall a fictional character  from a long time ago in a galaxy far far away, who attempted the same kind of spin after his efforts to fundamentally transform his republic were finally revealed to the masses.  Below  is a clip of his republic’s last SOTU address.

Now I know many of you may think this is a little corny; but the point is that this fictional character’s words differed from his actions and the people chose to listen to his words and ignore his actions.  Before they knew it the republic was gone along with their liberty.  The simple lessons one can learn from a movie.

We cannot be mesmerized by his words because his words are crafted to sell his snake oil to the masses.  We must focus on his actions because it’s through his actions the truth is revealed.  Many who are ignorant and take our liberty for granted will fall under his spell with ease and proclaim in a loud voice that he’s wants to work with the Republicans and he’s not a radical leftist.  They will shout from the roof tops that he’s moving towards the center.  However those who are informed and understand the value of liberty will see through his trickery and will judge him not by his words, but by his actions.

Which person will you be?

Liberty forever, freedom for all!

The interesting thing about that video is the last line, so this is how liberty dies, to thounderous applause” because this was seen as a slam at President Bush, but now it seems so much more fitting with the current president.
Barack Obama is going to say what he has to tonight, but we all know that he hasnt changed his stripes and he cannot be trusted.

I agree that this video appears to fit with Obama more than Bush. I also agree that he is not going to change on bit Steve…he’s a radical.

Thought I was going to be ill at the “because of who they love” line, just didn’t seem presidential. The rest of the speech was platitudes ad nauseam. Thought Ryan got rolling toward the end and Bachman did all right.

The speech was just so flat and empty. Very week. Ryan did great. He treated the American people like adults.

I really liked what Paul Ryan had to say, but I wonder how many people have that line of thinking? He is so smart and so matter-of-fact that it may put off some people.

Concerning the SOTU speech itself, Obama was Obama. He is a good speaker, when he isn’t speaking off the cuff. He really knows how to deliver a speech, but his words left much to be desired. He referred to America as a democracy at least twice and when he started talking about cutting spending, I wanted to ask him where he has been for the past two years.

I also like Paul Ryan. The problem is he is one person and in order for us to turn this thing around it will take more than just Paul Ryan. I do believe this was one of President Obama’s worst speeches.

I liked Ryan’s speech a lot. I think he was serious and articulate. He wasn’t ooga-booga deficit hawk scary, but he didn’t mince words about the mess we’re in either. That’s a pretty good intellectual base upon which to build the 2011 legislative year.

As for Bachman, I thought she did well too. Rather than compete with Ryan’s response, she complimented it. If the two responses were a musical piece, Ryan deftly sang the melody while Bachman handled the harmony. It worked well as a unified theory of modern Republicanism.

Obama remains a joke. Democrats don’t like the SOTU because there’s not enough big stupid expensive government. Independents don’t like it because it’s so gauzy and nebulous. Conservatives have long since given up listening to Obama and searching for even a scrap of good sense. This speech changes none of those realities.
