Arizona Senate loses their backbone on illegal immigration bills

Well we’re just shy of a year since Arizona passed and signed into law SB 1040.  This Act made it a state misdemeanor for aliens to be in the state of Arizona without having the required documents on their person.  It was also designed to crack down on entities sheltering, hiring and transporting illegal aliens.  It enforced all federal immigration laws currently on the books.  The law caused an avalanche of criticism from leftist groups who protested the law and economically boycotted the state.   The Obama administration’s attacked the law by bringing forth a series of legal challenges against it.  The end results, the federal courts stripped the law of its major provisions making it weak and ineffective.

Yesterday the Republican controlled Arizona Senate rejected five different bills aimed at addressing various areas of concerns in regards to the state’s illegal immigration problems.  It appears they have lost their will to fight and have succumbed to the will of the federal government, leftist boycotts, and local business interests in the state.  Business leaders urged the Senate to shelve the issue because they wanted to avoid any further damage to the Arizona economy.

Republican Sen. John McComish said, “It’s time for us to take a timeout, it’s something that the people don’t want us to be focusing on.”

So the drain that illegal immigrants place on the local economy is something the people don’t want to focus on?  Large sections of Arizona’s border that are off-limits to Arizona citizens is something they don’t want to focus on?

Democratic Minority Leader David Schapira said after the three-hour floor session, “I’m hopeful that now we can move on and focus on the business of the state.”  I thought illegal immigration was the business of the state.  Well maybe in 2010 but not so much now.  I guess the situation on the ground just magically resolved itself.

Even the once defiant Governor of Arizona Jan Brewer sounded like she has had enough.

Earlier on Thursday, Gov. Jan Brewer said she didn’t have positions on the bills and she declined to wave off legislators from taking up the issue of illegal immigration again.  “I believe that illegal immigration is an important subject to the populace in Arizona and is something that probably needs to be further addressed,” said Brewer, a Republican who signed SB1070 into law.

So the illegal immigration problem in Arizona “probably” needs to be further addressed.  Wow what a change of heart from a year ago.  Oh that’s right, 2010 was an election year, I almost forgot.  2010 was the year that John McCain was ready to send troops to the border to plug the hole.  2010 was the year that Jan Brewer was on TV every other night standing firm against an intrusive federal government that was threatening her state’s sovereignty.  How the mood has changed in 2011.

In the end the following is what it’s truly about.

Dozens of CEOs of major employers and business groups signed a letter distributed Wednesday by the Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce, saying that passage of additional legislation on illegal immigration would damage the economy and tourism.

Arizona should instead push for federal action on immigration and border issues, according to the letter signed by heads of construction companies, hospitals, real estate developers and US Airways.

“Arizona’s lawmakers and citizens are right to be concerned about illegal immigration,” the letter said. “But we must acknowledge that when Arizona goes it alone on this issue, unintended consequences inevitably occur.”

This sounds like it has more to do with money than principle; so much for standing up and doing the right thing.  This is a text book example of how politicians are influence by money and the interests of business.  This vote yesterday was a big win for the left.  This vote yesterday compromised Arizona’s state sovereignty a bit more.

Liberty forever, freedom for all!

My understanding is that those bills were designed to end up in the Supreme Court. With one bill already there, and another on the way, they may feel resources are being stretched. They do not have unlimited resources. Remember, the Obama regime is attacking them on more than just SB 1070, as well as various other groups that are suing the state. Also, they already have immigration laws that Joe Arpaio is using to continue his work. Maybe they’re just waiting to see the results to the work they’ve already done. I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt based on what they have already attempted.

Two of the five measures were designed to fast track the issue of automatic citizenship to U.S. born babies by illegal immigrants to the SCOTUS. However the other three dealt with public services, health care, and driving. They were unrelated to SB1040. They did have a great deal on money donated (in the millions) to help defend SB1040. I think they have taken such a beating and as you said they are being attack from all angles by the federal monster. Thanks for the comments.

This is disappointing to say the least, and I hope that rjjrdq is right. However it is beginning to look like this was nothing more than election year posturing.

I hope Arizona doesn’t give up the fight completely, but I would have to agree with rjjrdq on this one. They may be waiting to see the results of things already in the works.

These were bills that were designed to deal with separate issues related to illegal immigration and have very little to do with SB1040. What this tells me is that they really don’t have the desire to tackle the immigration problems because they either fear another backlash or they just don’t feel like it’s worth cost. I think this is a sad thing because they did go it alone for some time and they did take a beating in terms of court rulings and boycotts. It’s always a sad thing for me when I see a state sacrifice their sovereignty because the federal government has imposed their will on them.

This is disheartening news. rjjrdq, I hope yo’re roght but it sure smacks of money trumping what is right. Having said that, it’s possible that these bills were poorly written and had no chance of success, which would only bring additional cost upon the State. But if that were the case, Brewer could have shown a different tone. Like John, I am worried.

I think this has everything to do with money Jim. I understand that Arizona like many states have limited resources, however when businesses get involved in setting the policy and direction on matters of illegal immigration, we have a problem. And when they influence state Senators and governors we have a bigger problem.

What about the tourists not wanting to come to Arizona because the state is over-run with illegals, many of them of the criminal sort. They can’t go to border towns or into some of the state’s parks. Sad situation for everyone but illegals.

All the Republican Senate cowards need to know that when they brushed aside some of the policing laws in Arizona, they will be forfeit their seats in 2012; compliments of the Tea Party. Immigration is no longer a less prominent issue, as just like jobs it is costing too much money that it is almost beyond imagination. Those RINO’s in Arizona who sold their vote to corporate and big business and the zealot open border lobby will feel the wrath of the Arizona taxpayers. But not just in the financially ailing Arizona, but Utah, California, Nevada and many other States that have deceived the American population when voted into office. Americans should not have to compete with criminal foreigners who are being rewarded for their wrongdoing with taxpayer money. E-Verify must become a permanent tool to protect American jobs, with the full force of ICE. Just how much is your State spending to accommodate illegal aliens?

Secure Communities policing law, along with the 287 (g) should be enforced throughout the United States. On the agenda should be a National ID card, which should be issued to every native born American and resident legal immigrant. We will endure against the Leftist-Socialism sinking this country into of crisis. Incidentally–Any poll can be manipulated in favor of the lobbying or open border degenerates.

In Arizona Governor Brewer and State Senator Peirce authored a very harsh but financially needed set of policies to save the State from imminent insolvency.

SB 1309: Establishes criteria for Arizona citizenship, requiring at least one legal U.S. parent in order to receive Arizona citizenship. This would allow Arizona to eliminate instant birthright babies. The Republicans who down-voted could not have read the 14th amendment, in its entirety? That it includes the parents of an infant born in the US can stay? Why is nobody interpreting; Article 1 Section 9 Paragraph 1 where it gives the State(s) the sole right to permit into the State whom it thinks right and shall not be prohibited by the Congress, which doesn’t preempt the rights of the Federal Government? Why should the U.S. Government or any of its states tolerate any individual or person to come into the sovereign nation and make demands to fit their wishes?

SB 1405: Requires an admissions officer of a hospital to verify a person’s citizenship or legal status before admitting the person for non-emergency care.

SB 1407 Requires the Arizona Department of Education (ADE) to collect data from school.

SB 1611: Specifies that it is unlawful for a person to operate a motor vehicle in Arizona if the person is unlawfully present in the U.S. They must demonstrate a lawful presence for obtaining public housing, a vehicle title and registration, community college or university admission or any public benefit.

Those who are fed-up with paying even higher taxes to support the illegal immigration invasion should join THE TEA party in your State. The Tea Party is the only true hope with have against growing government, lower taxes and to stop the corrupt slime in Washington and State Capitols that is selling the future of your children. Europe is being overrun by economic immigrants, but this must be halted in America. From all over the world they are coming here, to make a better life. But then what about a better life for our families and our children? What about our children who have to learn in crammed schools for of illegal aliens. What about our own low income Americans, who are forced to wait for hours in hospital waiting rooms overcrowded with illegals? How about the billions of dollars spent in judicial courts, jails and prisons, inundated will illegal alien criminals? Don’t let the Liberal press delude you of the truth and the astronomical costs now that will certainly gain momentum in the future. Illegal immigration must end now by insuring every dirty businessman or contractor who hires cut-price labor goes to prison.

There is a list of businesses who issued a stark warning to the Arizona politicians to back-off enacting any more anti-illegal immigration bills. It is my strong opinion by going to BIZJOURNAL, that if you is infuriated by this disgusting stance of large and small businesses to go ahead and boycott them. Perhaps they might comprehend that the people have the power to stop this nation financial crippling by the ingress of cheap labor.

May be six months in Sheriff Joe Arpaio “TENT CITY” would alter their perception in giving jobs to illegal aliens? Free faxes to demand an end to illegal immigration can be found at NumbersUSA or any of the hundreds of pro-sovereignty, Pro-US Constitution groups. Local phone directories have blue pages to contact federal and State lawmakers. DOING NOTHING IS DESTROYING THIS GREAT COUNTRY. Illegal aliens are voting in our elections, using absentee ballots, so we need mandatory government ID to be eligible.
