You’re either a tool or a target… which is it?

Today I had a discussion with a few friends about how easy people can be swayed when they’re not informed.  One of my friends jumped into the conversation and said people are either tools or targets and it stuck with me.  So what did he mean by this?  Let’s take a look at the current Medicare and debt ceiling debate.  The left is counting on the uninformed to be swayed by their scare tactics.  They use these tactics to advance their agenda and it’s quite effective.  Think about this for a moment.  Global warming alarmists have been using these same scare tactics for years.  They proclaimed that there was some sort of global cataclysmic event just over the horizon if we didn’t modify our behavior.  They marched out so called experts to show us all the mounting evidence that supported their position.  Their goal was to rally the uninformed behind their banner and for the most part they were successful.  They gained the steadfast support of the UN, major corporations, and even our elected officials.  We were all doomed if we didn’t change our ways and the uninformed were carrying the global warming banner.  We were well on our way to passing cap and trade, that was until emails revealed that the data was being fudged.  This so call evidence the global warming alarmists put forward was nothing more than a lie and the uninformed took the bait hook, line and sinker.  They became tools for the left because they chose to remain uninformed and refused to look at different points of view on the subject.  These uninformed tools for the left are the most dangerous sort because they truly know not what they do.

I used the global warming case in point because in my opinion it’s one of the best examples of how the left uses the uninformed to advance their agenda.  These misguided souls are nothing more than tools; tools to be used by left or any radical group who tosses a few $100 dollars words their way and some skewed data.  They lack understanding.  They lack understanding of our history, our founders, our free market system, liberty, freedom, and the major issues that impact each of us.  I’ve written on this topic many times and I will continue to write on it because I feel it’s fundamental in understanding the strategy of the left and in some cases the right.  Both sides have successfully used this simple yet effective strategy over and over again and quite frankly I’m tired of it.  I’m tired of seeing good people maneuvered into a position to be used by them.  I often wonder when the people are going wise up.  When are they going to see these tactics for what they are?  Perhaps the answer is as simple as they simply don’t want to be informed.  After all when one is informed and engaged everything changes.

The first thing that changes is your eyes are opened and you understand things with a level of clarity that many will never know.  The next thing that changes is you become dangerous to the status quo.  You become the thing they abhor; something that gets under their skin.  You become a target because you see through their plans and schemes and you are threat to them.  This is the power of an informed voter.  An informed voter cannot be swayed so easily and sucked into the scare tactic trap.  An informed voter knows Paul Ryan’s proposal to reform Medicare is reasonable and long overdue.  And informed voter realizes the debt ceiling has more to do about out of control spending than the amount of revenue the government takes in.  These scare tactics rarely work on an informed voter and the left knows this.

This is why the MSM and the left aggressively target those from the right who can clearly define and convey the conservative message in an understandable manner.  When a voter is informed on the issues they tend to become passionate and engaged.  Their resolve to advance sound values and practical solutions is unwavering.  They’re not only willing to run the race; but finishing it becomes a necessity and this scares the hell out of the establishment.  If they can’t be used as a tool then they must be targeted.  And this is how things roll in our current political environment.  Just ask “Joe the Plumber“.

The more I learn, the more it becomes clear, our system is not what we are taught it is.

Indeed Trestin. In fact, much of what I’ve learned over the years was on my own. It took some effort and 30 or so different book sources. The point is people need to take the time to do the research on the issues or they’re destined to be tools.

Whether or not you like third parties, I am proud to call myself a card-carrying Libertarian. We just had our ballot access taken from us by the Ohio GOP with (as usual) devious legislation that just “happened” to affect the only “minor” party in Ohio. Political freedom is a joke. Voting has been reduced to (for the most part) choosing between two hand-picked establishment candidates.

That’s a shame Ted and a sad thing in America.

Some call me an idealist for my stance. I consider myself a realist. I see a broken system, and think it is more efficient to “fix” the system by working outside of the current institutions than from within. I may be wrong, but my decision is made with full acknowledgement of the risks.

Good post John and there is no doubt in my mind that there has been a deliberate dunbing down of the American voter over the years for this very reason. An informed voter is a dangerous voter (in the eyes of those who wish to remain in power) and so everything is done to scare the voter into voting a particular way.

You are absolutely correct about the voter being dumb down. Their lives are filled with distractions and entertainment. This leads to people living in the now and not planning for the future which is a shame. It also makes them uninformed voters and this is part of the problem.

Good post, and I agree with Steve. Critical thinking is not taught in schools, and that plays to the progressives’ advantage.

That is an intentional oversight. People that can take information, process it, and make a decision based on facts are useless to the left. When you look at how the educational system works, the intent becomes clear.

Excellent post John. These folks are being used as useful idiots.

Critical thinking creates a problem for the left. The left and some on the right do not want to solve problems. They would rather use the problems as a means to advance their agenda. Critical thinkers need not apply.

Your friend is a genius. Those that can’t or won’t think for themselves are going to be tools and those that do think for themselves will always be targets. the liberals hijacked our education system years ago so they have us at a disadvantage. If enough of us keep the torch alive with fire, we will overcome this advantage.

I agree Jim. The left cannot use the informed, only the uninformed. We need to start showing up at school board meetings in demand that more focus on the founding of this country and the founders be required teaching.

Indeed Bunker. As I said above it is time to engage and show up at our school board meetings. Meaningful change can take place right in our back yards. We need to prepare the next generation, and make sure they understand liberty and freedom.

Good Post John! I agree with Steve. There definitely has been a dumbing down of the American voter. What kids aren’t learning today is really disconcerting and what they do learn is filled with liberal propaganda and is teaching kids a distorted view or reality. What libs are doing to kids and adults today is an abomination.

There has indeed been a dumbing down of our children across the board; however there were very specific programs that were eliminated or rewritten. This is why it’s so crucial for parents to stay engaged in their child’s education. Pick up their text book and take a look to see what they’re being taught.

I hear it every day from people who read a book a year (that by Chelsea Handler) & get their in-depth knowledge of issues from Oprah Winfrey and Joyless Behar. And they consider themselves not only informed but infallible. History began with Bill Clinton. Grammar and logic are subjects as alien to them as blacksmithing. Man, if it wasn’t for Jack Daniels & you guys in the blogosphere, I’d have nobody with whom to relate…

I’m going to add a little to your great Tool or Target piece. As I wrote yesterday, the Dems are engaging in the politics of silence. It’s easier to throw stones than to be targeted, thus the deathly silence from Dems on a budget plan.

To express a vision is to make yourself a target. There are polls that show the Ryan’s plan is unpopular – no surprise for an austerity plan. The question is “where is the Democrats’ plan” and how does that poll when compared to the GOP’s?

The Dems are keeping their agenda under wraps, and though there is an underlying strategy, they are moving it inch by inch. That is why in my piece I said that the GOP needs to fill in the blanks and start throwing stones themselves. The Dem plan is tax-tax-tax. I don’t think that will be very popular.

    • John Carey May 26, 2011 at 11:32 PM

You are absolutely correct Ted. Anyone who has a plan or vision and puts it out there is definitely a target. They open themselves up to criticism. They should be applauded for their courage.

Except for the Republicans who are backing away on entitlement reform, ala Scott Brown.

I firmly beliieve the GOP needs to not only defend their own plan, but “present” the Dems plan in lieu of a formal proposal.

“Do you want your taxes to go up 30%?” Congressman Reppy Ublican asks his constituent. Constituent shakes her head.

“How about if your taxes go up 40%? Would that be better?” She shakes her head again.

“How about 50%? How would that suit you?”

“That would be awful,” she says.

“I agree,” the Congressman says, “but that’s the Democrats’ plan.”

        • John Carey May 27, 2011 at 9:34 AM

They need to stay on target with this plan. I think this is why the Democrats are slow rolling their plan because they know it won’t be popular. They know they will have a tough time defending it. It’s much easier to target Ryan’s plan than defend their own. I have very little use for people or groups like this because they’re part of the problem.
