Friday Ramblings: Squabbling over the scraps

The other day Right Hand Man and I discussed the following scene from the movie Braveheart.  I apologize for the poor quality but I know you will get the point of this scene.

The scene begins with the Nobles squabbling over their land rights granted by the King of England and who is the rightful heir to the Scottish Crown.  William Wallace played by Mel Gibson turns away from the Nobles and begins to walk out of the room.  When questioned about what his opinion is on the matter Wallace tells the Nobles that because they’re so busy squabbling over the scraps that the King of England is throwing their way they have forgotten there is a better way and that better way is freedom.  Very powerful words that is still applicable today.

We all know that we have an entitlement problem in this country and that whenever some politician comes along with a plan to reform or eliminate them there is a significant amount of resistance to the idea.  We see commercials that depict grandma being pushed over a cliff or we hear how social security checks will be threatened and millions of seniors could lose essential benefits.  These efforts to whip up support against such plans to reform entitlement programs tend to be highly successful because people are afraid of losing the scraps thrown their way by the government.  And entitlement programs like social security and Medicare are indeed scraps folks.  Many people are so locked into the mindset that social security and Medicare are such indispensible programs that people aren’t even willing to view life without them.  Instead they’re content with not letting go and squabbling over the scraps.  The question is how do you break this mindset and convince people that these programs are indeed scraps and that there is another way?  How do we convince them to embrace free market solutions and liberty again?  Like William Wallace states in the clip it takes courage.

It takes courage to stand up and address our entitlement problems no matter what kind of scare tactics those who support these bankrupt programs throw at you.  It takes courage to promote sound free market solutions.  There is a better way and that better way is freedom.  We should be free to decide our own fate; but it will indeed take courage to take the first step towards freedom again because there are forces out there that believe scraps are all we deserve.  I for one believe there is a better way.

Liberty forever, freedom for all!

    Not just entitlements!

Speaking of scraps. Government has robbed us of our liberty, our sovereignty over our own lives is now severely restricted, but they throw us a few scraps in return. People who have no sense of history don’t even understand that what they believe is freedom is rather just a few scraps left over.

Good post. That’s always the problem. People get attached to a luxury and convince themselves it’s a necessity. They cannot see life without that “necessity” until the choice to do without it is no longer theirs.

Unfortunately courage doesn’t come in pill form. One either has it or one doesn’t. For many the courage is there but it is dormant. As in Brave Heart, it takes the right leader to stir this dormant courage back to life.

Great post John, and a great scene from Braveheart. It really does hold true today doesn’t it? The politicians are too scared to do what is needed to save our country and it is all because they are more interested in holding onto power. Meanwhile it is we who are giving away our freedoms every day as the federal government’s power grows.

Good post. Statism has the people hooked on the entitlement programs, just like people get hooked on drugs. These people are addicted to the scraps and now they can’t imagine life without them. They have traded away a portion of their freedom in return for the government taking care of them. Somehow it needs to be shown to the people that their lives would be so much freer and they would be able to make more choices for themselves if they didn’t rely on the government for help.

I think many people can’t imagine a life with it any liberty and freedom again because they simply can’t see a better way is out there. They have indeed become so addicted to the scraps the government throws there way they’re fearful of losing what they have. We need to change this mindset.
