Teeing it up: A Round at the LINKs

Last week I had a few great discussions with some friends about the state of conservatism in the Republican Party, the constitution, our founders, and the way forward.  I have posted a few articles this past week slamming Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney.  This is where my mind has been ever since Mr. Gingrich shot up in the polls.  I have had a very difficult time wrapping my mind around why so many conservatives are so eager to support big government Republicans.  It has been deeply troubling for me and forced me to question where the party is taking us.  In in my opinion there are really only three reasons why conservatives would support Romney or Gingrich.  The first is the obvious; people are looking for the most electable candidate to beat Obama and they see Gingrich and Romney as the two who have the most crossover appeal.  The second is that many conservatives simply don’t understand what true conservatism is about and believe that candidates like Romney and Gingrich are what represents true conservatism.  And the third reason I believe many conservatives have thrown their support behind Romney or Gingrich is because they’re comfortable with the big government framework we have in place.  Being a big government Republican is not a deal breaker for these folks.  If I’m close to the mark with any of these conclusion I’ve reached, this should give pause to many small government, constitutionally minded conservatives.  It tells me we have a problem and we’re on the verge of of repeating the mistakes of the past.

The enthusiasm the tea party movement brought to the national debate in 2010 has all but faded and many are now searching for the next step in the process.  My suggestion is the same as it always has been; we need to become an informed citizenry again.  We need to learn about the core principles that are the cornerstone our nation was built on.  We need to learn about liberty and be selfish with it.  We need to learn about our constitution so that we have the knowledge to reestablish it as the law of the land.  And lastly we need to reacquaint ourselves with the men who founded our great country. I truly believe these are the things we must do to regain an appreciation for the institutions and traditions that have made America one of the greatest nations in history.  An informed citizenry is dangerous to the status quo…and the status quo is what we desire to change.
