Saturday morning thoughts: What are conservatives trying to conserve?

Some time ago I wrote an article titled “I’m not the same conservative I was five years ago.”  In it I tried to explain my own evolution from being a conservative who blindly followed the establishment narrative to one who no longer was willing to give the establishment a free pass.  I learned that big government statists were not limited by party affiliation.  In fact many statists can be found in our own conservative party.  I decided it was time to take off the party goggles and view the issues through the eyes of an American who loves liberty.  It took some time and a great deal of reading to course correct my direction but when I did I realized how wrong I had been about many things.  It made me take a hard look at myself and ask what I was trying to conserve as a conservative.

The truth is for the last 100 years the progressives/liberals have piece by piece fundamentally transformed our nation before our very eyes from the nation our founding fathers established that viewed life, liberty and property rights as unalienable to a nation that can spy on (NSA), illegally search and seize (TSA), detain indefinitely (NDAA), and if necessary execute its citizens.  We have transformed into a nation where a government can regulate businesses out of business and seize your property in the name of conservation or national security.  If this is the nation that conservatives are trying to conserve, I will have none of it.  The nation I want to conserve or maybe better put “reestablish” is the constitutional republic our founding fathers established in 1787; a republic that placed strict limitations on governmental powers and empowered it citizens to govern themselves.  I want the nation that protects the rights of its citizens, not one that legislate them away when a crisis arises.  The question is how to we get there from here.  The deck appears to be stacked against us.

The first step in my opinion starts with you.  It’s time to look in the mirror and ask the hard questions.  I do this all the time because I too am evolving in terms of my political ideology.  I’m not the same conservative I was a year ago.  You must first determine how you feel about life, liberty, and property rights.  If you believe as the founders did that these are rights you were born with and not granted by some governmental entity you then must ask if the candidates you support on both the local and national level feel the same.  Do the candidates truly believe the constitution is a document that restrains the federal government or are they just saying they do to get your vote?  Look at their record.  Their actions will tell you more than the words they speak.  Just look at President Obama.  He says one thing then does another.  He’s a liar who doesn’t deserve our vote. Elizabeth Warren lied about having a Native American heritage.  Does she deserve the vote of Massachusetts voters?  The answer is no.  If you will lie about your heritage, you will lie about anything and these are the kind of people we can’t afford to send to Washington D.C. anymore.  Do you think the current system is broken; that politicians are overstepping its constitutional authority?  If the answer is yes, then as a conservative what are you trying to conserve?  As for me I would like to see the reestablishment of a constitutional republic, so does this make me a conservative or something else?

The answer is it makes me a person who wants to conserve the traditions and institutions that were established by the founding fathers and in these times it makes me a conservative on the outside looking in.  Today many conservatives appear more concerned about conserving the America we have become than reestablishing an America that made us special and unique amongst the nations of the world.  The America we have today is one that is slipping towards tyranny with each regulation implemented and each law passed, forcing one group of Americans to surrender their wages to support another.  Folks when the government confiscates a portion of your income (property) and gives it to another with the threat of incarceration (IRS) that’s slavery.  This is not the America I want to conserve.

Change starts within and spreads to the rest of the system.  Until conservatives determine what they truly stand for and what they truly want to conserve we will continue to march towards tyranny and slavery.  People will continue to vote for the candidate based on party affiliation or simply because they are not Obama and liberty will never be restore and the constitutional republic will never be reestablished.  As painful as that sounds, that’s how I see it.  Tell me how you see it.

Liberty forever, freedom for all.

What a great post John and I think you are 100% correct. Too many people who call themselves conservatives are locked into simply toeing the party line, even when the Republicans are guilty of expanding the nanny state and stealing liberties in the name of security. I admit, I was one of those people for a long time but having been in this fight for a number of years now I understand that both parties are guilty of this.Until we stand up and show both parties we have had enough out liberties will continue to slip away.
I have been working on a post for a few days now about how the Republican talking heads sound as if all we need to do is elect Romney and the nation will be saved when in reality there will be much more hard work to do. I think they underestimate the problem because their first goal is help the party win. But it isn’t that simple.

Thanks Steve. We do need to start looking at these candidates with a more critical eye, but it really starts with each of us. As I said I’m evolving in terms of political ideology. The more knowledge I gain about the founders and their writings the more I get it. I can’t wait to read your post. I think we as conservatives need to reevaluate what we truly want to conserve an then go from there.

A really excellent post, John. I think many conservatives have gone through a similar evokution to yours. The statist and progressives have nearly destroyed our rpublic and as you say, if we truly want to return the the constitutional republic our Founder gave to us, then we must find candidates at every level that believe the same way. I would go even further. The progressive have all but destroyed our culture too. For a society to flourish, it must have a certain unity of beliefs of what is acceptable behavior. I n other words, there needs to be unity on certain social norms without which the society fails. I am not sure we can get our republic back without getting our culture back.

Thanks Jim. Obama and his progressive hoard have attacked the traditions of our culture since he has taken office. If you want to break a society down the first thing you must do is dumb down its citizens. Once this is done you can than mold/manipulate them much more easily. People will let go of long held traditions because they have no foundation to help them understand why the traditions are so important for a functioning civil society. All the progressives are doing is harvesting the crop they planted 100 years ago. This is why it was so easy for Obama to support same-sex marriage even though it goes against long held traditions. It is another step towards breaking down our society and once society breaks down…it will be easier for people to be led into slavery. That’s Obama and the progressive vision for America.
