Why are More Americans Renouncing their Citizenship?
Is it a sign of oppression, or economic failure that would cause people to renounce their citizenship and leave the US? The Daily Reckoning has more…
07/03/12 Laguna Beach, California – In November, millions of Americans will trudge to their local polling places to cast votes in the hope of improving their lives here in the USA. Between now and then, a few hundred Americans will vote with their feet in the hope of improving their lives outside the USA.
Last year, nearly 1,800 Americans surrendered their citizenship. In a nation of 300 million folks, 1,800 émigrés is hardly a rush for the exits. But the recent trend is, nevertheless, intriguing.
This is hard to pin down. It isn’t like people are polling folks that leave. But, the fact that the biggest spike has occurred under Obama, it might be safe to assume that economics and taxes have a roll.
I wonder how big of an issue it has to become before they build a wall to keep people in? We always talk about how the Soviet bloc and Cuba went to great lengths to keep their citizens from escaping the “workers paradise.” I think it’s a valid question to ask if our nation will one day try to prevent leaving the people from fleeing, “hope and change?”

I’ve read that these are expats who are already living and working overseas, and they are tired of being taxed twice, by the country the work in and by the US. We are one of the few nations that does that, btw.

And people laughed at Ron Paul for saying the same thing just a few months ago … He’s not so crazy after all, is he? The short-term outlook for liberty is dim, but keep the light shining. Central planning doesn’t work. It can’t. Totalitarian regimes fail. Always. In the long run, liberty will win if we just keep the flame of liberty alive.

That is a good point CL, totalitarianism always collapses in the end. But, it always inflicts millions of casualties on the way down.

[...] Why are More Americans Renouncing their Citizenship? [...]
John, those 1,800 Americans that gave up their citizenship in only one year are part of the 1% Americans – those that pay top tax rates and are part of the 40% of total revenue collected, those that create jobs, those that invest in American enterprises, those that are leaders in their communities, and those that are educated and usually know who to elect as our Representatives in Congress better than the other 99%.
When countries enter into a decline pattern it is because those that can lead them are abandoning them.
It’s what happens when people that produce leave. It’s not a pretty picture.

I’m sure the libs will spin it as people leaving because they can’t live in a racist nation that fails to reelect Barack Obama.
