Did the mainstream media’s bias contribute towards President Obama’s terrible debate performance?
We all know the mainstream media is in the tank for President Obama; but did their bias and unwillingness to ask the tough questions throughout his Presidency contribute towards the President’s terrible debate performance? Looking at the debate from a slightly different angle I believe it did. In an effort to shield President Obama from the impact his terrible economic policies has had on America the mainstream media has not only done themselves and the American people a great disservice, but they may have unknowingly sabotaged the President’s debate performance last night.
By not holding the President’s feet to the fire when abysmal economic numbers were being reported quarter after quarter for the last four years the mainstream media didn’t do his administration any favors. By not asking the President to defend his policies that clearly have failed they may be indirectly responsible for his undoing. The strongest steel is forged in the hottest fire and for the last four years President Obama has not felt the heat. Instead Obama has been protected and coddled by a mainstream media that is more concerned about getting him reelected than reporting the truth. The problem with that is he can only hide from his record for so long before someone comes along and holds him accountable.
That person was Mitt Romney and he hammered the President with the economic reality the President’s policies has created; a reality that sees 23 million people out of work with anemic growth. Finally the President had to defend the indefensible and he was unprepared. After all he had been given a free pass by the mainstream media for four years, how dare Mitt Romney hold him accountable for his record. He looked irritated and lost as Mitt Romney fired fact after fact at him. At one point during the debate he asked the moderator to move on to another topic. He might as well have said “uncle.” The President looked rattled and shaken and not very presidential. For the first time he had to face an opponent who took the fight to him and he was soundly defeated.
So the mainstream media that adores Obama so much is now asking what happened. How could their champion who is such a great orator get schooled? Why was he so unprepared? To find the answer to their questions they need look no further than their inability to be objective and unbiased. Their decision to give the President a free pass in order to protect him may ultimately lead to his political demise because he hasn’t felt the heat until now. And last night he was burned by it. How’s that for irony.

imho you are correct, sir- Romney was absolutely Gingrich-esque up there… LOVED it
The ball was teed up pretty high for Mitt, and he took a swing- but my first thought was also that with SO little media scrutiny none of the issues and Obama fails have ever really been aired… and obviously, Obama’s had no experience having to defend anything he’s done or not done.
Now Ryan’s only concern is how easy to go on Plugs so he doesn’t appear too mean kicking him around the ring

Well his failures were aired in front of 54 million viewers. He has nowhere to run and I do expect a bump in the polls for Romney.

You make an interesting point, perhaps after having been coddled by the media for his whole presidency he wasn’t prepared for someone to actually question him and that is why he wasn’t ready. Romney was really on his game last night, he surgically dismantled Obama and his policies with facts and Obama isn’t used to that.

Obama has a glass jaw. And last night he proved he can’t take a punch. From the very beginning he was knocked off balance and never really recovered. He looked like an amateur.

Obama couldn’t handle the reality or the facts that Mitt Romney kept throwing at him last night. He looked like he would rather have been anywhere else, but was trapped.
I think it was clear from the beginning, Jim Leher had no intention of allowing Romney to say what he needed to say. He tried to cut him off, more than once, but Romney asserted his right to follow up on Obama’s lies. I’m glad he didn’t back down.

Romney did a great job controlling the direction of the debate. He wasn’t prepared to answer the tough questions about his failed policies. He thought he could just stand up there and smile and everything would be alright. How wrong he was.

Great question, and the answer is yes!
Conservatives have been saying this for awhile, and even some honest liberals. Conservatives are better at debating issues because, being the challengers, we have to have our stuff together. Progressive smugness has led to complacency and intellectually flabbiness. We saw it in Obama last night.

Very true Silver. The reason conservatives can handle the heat better is because the mainstream media has forced them into that position. Their character has been forged with the hottest fire. Obama’s clearly was not and it showed last night.

It may be he was just plain lazy. His ego is so large, he may have thought the “love” of everyone would carry the day. He complained about having to “study” for the debate.

That could be very true Bunker. He just didn’t seem like he wanted to be there. Like he expected the win just by showing up and going through the motions.

In 2008, Obama had no record. Throughout his presidency he has only had to handle softballs. Romney was firing fastballs and Obama looked like an amateur. I hadn’t thought about the question you raised, John, but what you say makes perfect sense.

When you can’t make the case for your policies you see what we witnessed last night. So the next step is to call your opponent a liar and claim they’re not being truthful. That’s what Obama did today.

I’m sure the MSM will deny any responsibility for Obama’s poor performance. “But it’s not our job to hold him accountable! He’s so dreamy and intelligent! Asking him tough questions would be mean and racist.”

John, you have raised an excellent point. This entire administration is used to a fawning media. When exposed to reality, he crashed hard.
I believe the crash was much harder than anyone realizes. He looked incompetent and a President should NEVER look incompetent. Now he looks small and petty by accusing Romney of being a liar.
John Carey recently posted..The consequences of electing leaders with little or no virtue
The fact is that Obama’s speeches are written by Jon Favreau. “Dreams From My Father” was written by Bill Ayers. If you look at the very few examples of Obama’s actual writing from his college and early law “career” days, you can see that the man writes very poorly and probably is not too bright. He is far out of his depth. Not only that, but he is lazy and unwilling to do the hard work required of the President of the United States.
Falls in line with what he said about debate prep…it was a drag. I believe he thought he could flash a few smiles, look cool, and breeze right through. His mindset was, this stuff is easy. Not so much. Now people will be watching both the President and the media during the next debate.
