Teeing it up: A Round at the LINKs (Denial Edition)

Well after a three week hiatus, a round at the LINKs is back.  Today I wanted to talk about denial because I believe it might also explain why Obama still has an approval rating in the mid to upper 40s.  This past week I had a number of conversations with people who simply for some reason or another have decided not to acknowledge the poor economic numbers we’re facing and the massive debt we have accumulated in the last four years.  They believe America is too big to fail and the massive printing of money by the Federal Reserve means nothing.  One person even told me that we should just print enough money to pay down our debt and be done with it.  When I tried to tell him that it simply doesn’t work like that he couldn’t wrap his mind around it.  I told him that it would be one thing if the money was backed by something tangible and with value like gold or silver, but it’s not.  Sooner or later this house of cards we call fiat currency will collapse in on itself because it’s backed by regulations and laws and nothing of real value.  When people lose faith in the system and lose faith in the ability of the federal government to back the dollar then it all comes down.

Instead of heeding the warning signs, many people simply feel an economic meltdown like the one occurring in Europe cannot happen in America.  These are people who have very little understanding of history and how this has all happened before in the 1920s with Germany.  When you ask if they have ever heard of the Weimar Republic they shoot you a deer in the headlights look.  And this is the problem.  People have a weak historical background thanks to our public school system and they cannot recognize the patterns of history.  They’re taught how to feel about an issue rather than to critically examine it and look for solutions.  This leads to ignorance and bliss; a condition our federal government is perfectly ok with.  They do not understand the dangers of monetizing the debt and how it will lead to hyperinflation so they retreat into this denial mindset believing such things could never happen to America giving Ben Bernanke and the President the green light to fire up the printing presses.  And because of this, they’re more willing to give Obama the benefit of the doubt and another four years. That’s a problem.  Now on to the LINKs.
