The Big Picture: Joe Biden’s debate performance accomplished Team Obama’s goal

Sometimes we get lost in the details and lose sight of the big picture.  The other night I watched the VP debate and like many of you on the conservative side was appalled by Joe Biden’s mannerisms and unprofessional behavior. His condescending attitude, interruptions, smirks, and distortion of the truth made watching the debate very difficult.  I had never seen such a display of disrespect for an opponent as I did during the VP debate.  I was angry.  I was angry at the moderator for allowing it to happen and angry at Biden for sinking to such depths.

From a conservative perspective I thought Paul Ryan did well.  Unlike his opponent Ryan owned the facts and did his best to convey them when he wasn’t being interrupted by the moderator and Biden.  At one point during the debate it actually looked like both Biden and the moderator were ganging up on Ryan.  When the moderator becomes part of the debate it’s a clear sign that he or she has failed at doing their job.  It doesn’t matter whether the left thinks the moderator did an excellent job or if the right thinks they were bias, if the moderator becomes part of the story they have failed.  It’s much like a referee in a game.  If bad calls decide the outcome of a game the story line becomes more about the officiating and less about the game.  The bad calls instead of the play of the teams become the storyline and something is lost in the game.  But all of this is from a conservative prospective and Biden’s interrupting, erratic, smirking, attacking actions were not meant to sway me.  In fact Biden’s performance was not even meant to sway the independents.  It was meant to recharge the base and stop the bleeding.

After Obama’s terrible debate performance even his base was less than enthusiastic about voting for him.  The liberal mainstream media was imploding in on itself and many on the left were making excuses for the President.  As his poll numbers slipped nationally and in key battle ground states team Obama began panic.  They tried calling Romney a liar and that didn’t stop the bleeding.  They claimed Romney wanted to kill Big Bird and people thought that was ridiculous.  So for seven days they locked the gaffe prone Biden away prepping him for his debate against who many believe is one of the smartest politicians in Washington.  They didn’t need Biden to win over independents or change the entire momentum of the campaign.  They needed him to stop or slow down the bleeding caused by what the left perceived as Obama’s lack luster debate performance.  They needed as the President stated Joe to be Joe and charge up the base.  Because without the base, Obama has no chance to win.

The left’s base is made up of erratic, rude, emotional, radical individuals who care very little about the facts or history of America.  They can relate to Joe Biden because Joe Biden can relate to them and knows how to speak their language.  They use words like hostage and extreme to describe any attempt to correct our course through spending cuts.  They are driven by emotion and not facts.  You can see them in all their glory by tuning into MSNBC.  So it’s no wonder that so many on the left feel like Biden won the debate.  He fed them exactly what they wanted; an in your face confrontational debate performance and they gobbled it up.  This is normal acceptable behavior for the left.  The problem is that this behavior is not acceptable for a majority of Americans.  This is why Biden’s performance was such a turn off for many.  The same crap that the left laps up leaves a bad taste in most Americans mouth.

Most of America cannot relate to those kinds of mannerisms because we don’t act like that.  We don’t like loud mouth interrupting politicians who don’t allow their opponent an opportunity to present their case.  We desire a certain amount of professional courtesy and respect when debating the issues.  You saw that during the first Presidential debate.  Obama and Romney might not agree on the issues but they didn’t disrespect each other.  And you saw it from Paul Ryan in the VP debate.  But you didn’t see it from Biden or the moderator.  The reason is because their strategy was to charge up the base and they accomplished by speaking their language and going on the attack.

Before you can turn things around you must shift the momentum within your own party.  That was Biden’s job and he did it well.  Don’t buy into the notion that this debate wasn’t a game changer.  For the left it was indeed a game changer because it reenergized their base.  As for regaining to momentum on a national level, that will be left up to Obama in the next two debates.  Romney had better be prepared for anything.  Now that the MSM is squarely back in Obama’s corner look for them to continue to treat average performances as great and make mountains out of molehills in regards to the Romney/Ryan campaign.  You can expect anything from the Obama camp to turn this thing around.  An animal is most dangerous when it’s hurt.  Obama was hurt during the first debate so expect the worst from his campaign.

I’ll not be surprised at anything Obama comes up with between now and the election. The final two debates could decide this election and Obama knows that. Romney needs to be ready for the mud, because it is sure to be coming his direction.

There is no doubt that this debate got the base back into the game, but I wonder if it was worth it to the campaign because it turned so many people off. Perhaps they thought this was a risk worth taking because they expect Obama to bounce back in the next two debates and win back the moderates. The MSM is back on Obama’s bandwagon now and it is going to be a dog fight from here on out, but I think people are going to make up their minds on what they see and hear in the debates and not what the MSM tells them was in the debates. Romney can win this, he just has to be careful not to step in a trap.

Biden and Ryan gad two different missioms. As you say, Biden’s mission was to fire up the Democrat base after obama had done such a bad job in the first debate. Biden did his job. Rayn’s job was to influence to 2 or 3% of undecided voters to vote the Romney-Ryan ticket. I think he did his job, as well. I find it hard to believe that there exist, at this late date, anyone who doesn’t know how they are going to vote. For that reason, I don’t think the next two debates will make any difference in the way people will vote.

I agree. I think people are feeling the impact of this terrible economy and they have had enough. They want to try a different direction. If Romney does win we will need to hold his feet to the fire. We cannot stop advancing conservatism just because we win the WH.
