Teeing it up: A Round at the LINKs: (political beliefs and your job edition)
More and more I know people who claim they have lost their jobs or were passed over for promotion because of their political beliefs. Last week rumors swirled around “The View’s” Elisabeth Hasselbeck being released from her contract because her political views were clashing with the audience. We often hear of conservative actors and actresses keeping their political beliefs and activities private because they fear of being blacklisted by a liberal movie industry. Just a few days ago a friend of mine who is liberal and voted for Obama learned that the owner of the company she worked for let her go because of her political beliefs. This is a trend that appears to be on the uptick in a nation that is becoming increasingly politically divided. And this divide is a very real thing.
I have always held the belief that just because you have a right to express your political views doesn’t mean you have right to be free from any actions or reactions they may cause. Political views can cause a great deal strife within the family, with neighbors, and with co-workers/bosses. If you’re going to stick it out there and announce to the world where you fall on the political spectrum be prepared to reap the consequences, because nothing is more divisive than politics. So do I feel bad for people who lose their job or are passed over for promotion because their political beliefs are in conflict with the company owner? I do not. The way I see it is if you’re not smart enough to know the political views of the company you work for and you express political views that are in direct conflict with company/owner views then ready to accept the consequences of this action. You may have a right to express these views; but nothing says you have to. So when you volunteer them up, it’s a personal choice. We might be free to believe and say what we want in America, but that freedom does not shield us against the potential backlash our opinions may generate. I know this might not be a popular position with the “it’s not fair crowd,” but whoever said life was going to be fair. That’s my two cents for what it worth. Now on to the LINKs.

Thanks for the link John. I agree with you as well, if a person owns a company he or she should be allowed to hire and fire whomever they want and if they have an outspoken person who is constantly talking about their beliefs and they want to let them go because of it that is their right. Having said that, me and my right wing buddy at work talk politics quite a bit, I hope it doesn’t get me in trouble.

Steve Dennis recently posted..Open thread for Sunday, March 10th: Unnatural Selection
You’re very welcome Steve. As long as you know your work environment and you think it’s safe to discuss your political views than I don’t think you’ll have a problem.

Thanks for the link John.
No problem Mike. Keep up the great work.
John Carey recently posted..Teeing it up: A Round at the LINKs: (political beliefs and your job edition)
Thanks for the link, John. And for what it’s worth, I agree with your assessment. One must be willing to suffer the consequences of letting one’s political beliefs be known.

You’re very welcome Larry. You are free to say what you want. You’re just not free from the consequences of those words or beliefs.

Job discrimination based on politics hurts both sides of the aisle. Alec Baldwin was the first actor to play Jack Ryan in the very successful Tom Clancy movies. I believe it was Baldwin’s outspoken left of center politics that got him tossed from the sequels, by their conservative author. (Not that I’m crying for poor Alec!)
proof recently posted..Dianne Feinstein: It’s ‘Legal to Hunt Humans’
I agree with you proof. It does hurt both sides, but it is what it is and legally you can be fired over your political beliefs. I never said it was the right thing, only that you need to know your audience before you advertise your beliefs.

And not just your political beliefs. If you’re a pot smokin’, beer drinkin’ woman chaser, your good Methodist CEO might not put you up for that next promotion, either. You need to know your audience, indeed!

The long and the short of it is: Actions have consequences. The kid behind the counter with twenty nose piercings and eight facial tattoos might be the sweetest guy on the planet, too, but if people are put off by them, he might not get the job of his dreams, either.
proof recently posted..Adele and Beyoncé to Perform at FLOTUS’ Birthday Party: What Sequester?
That’s a good way to put it proof. I never looked at from that perspective.

I completely agree John, and especially in today’s political atmosphere. You note that an Obama voter lost his/her job because of his/her political views. That means a conservative couldn’t handle having an employee that helped to restrict small businesses (I’m guessing that’s close) – or maybe was generally obnoxious
Employers do not have the right to ask your political persuasion, so it’s wise to keep quiet. Thanks so much for the link. Your link-arounds are amazing.

Actions have consequences. One should always choose the battles they fight with that in mind.
Thanks for the link, John.
