This is the type of government our founders rejected

US President Barack Obama delivers commencement address at Ohio State UniversityWe need to get back to the basics as a people.  With all the scandals, corruption, attacks on our gun rights, attacks on our free speech, attacks on our faith, ignoring the constitution, crushing taxes, usurpations of states rights, suffocating regulations, and government using its institutions to threaten and impose its will on the people we need to find our way back to liberty and reject tyranny.  Take a good look, because this is what a soft tyranny looks like and we own it!.  This is the type of government our Founding Fathers rejected and we too should reject it.  236 years ago our founders stood against the type of despotic government we have today and eloquently listed their grievances against the Crown in the Declaration of Independence.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.–That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, –That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security…

To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world.

  • He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.
  • He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.
  • He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.
  • He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.
  • He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.
  • He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the Legislative powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.
  • He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands.
  • He has obstructed the Administration of Justice, by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary powers.
  • He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone, for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.
  • He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harrass our people, and eat out their substance.
  • He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures.
  • He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil power.
  • He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:
  • For Quartering large bodies of armed troops among us:
  • For protecting them, by a mock Trial, from punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States:
  • For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world:
  • For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent:
  • For depriving us in many cases, of the benefits of Trial by Jury:
  • For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences
  • For abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring Province, establishing therein an Arbitrary government, and enlarging its Boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule into these Colonies:
  • For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws, and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments:
  • For suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever.
  • He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us.
  • He has plundered our seas, ravaged our Coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.
  • He is at this time transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to compleat the works of death, desolation and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty & perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized nation.
  • He has constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to become the executioners of their friends and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands.
  • He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages, whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.

You’ve grown up hearing voices that incessantly warn of government as nothing more than some separate, sinister entity that’s at the root of all our problems. Some of these same voices also do their best to gum up the works. They warn that tyranny is always lurking just around the corner. You should reject these voices. Because what they suggest is that our brave and creative and unique experiment in self-rule is somehow just a sham with which we can’t be trusted.  —President Barack Hussein Obama, Ohio State University commencement speech, May 2013

Are you tracking with me.  Tyranny is tyranny no matter how you slice it and no matter who tries to put a smiley face on it.

    I couldn’t agree more, John. Our government has long been out of control and it is getting worse. At every turn, we see President Obama and his administration doing things that should make us all fear for the direction our government is taking. These are no idle threats against our liberty and freedom.

      The problem Larry, that regardless of political party in power the government continues to grow and our liberties continue to diminish. There is no longer a party that stands for limited government. Both parties seek to entrench themselves and they do so by promising goodies for their constituents never once stopping to consider how we’re going to pay for it.

    It is said that as we get older, we become less optimistic. Well, that’s me. I don’t see enough people that know or care to learn about the original intent of the founders. Many don’t even know who their representatives are, or can name the vp or SCOTUS judges. These are the folks that the left loves. Sheep, easily led to captivity and eventual slaughter. Personally, I think we need to split the country in two. I know it won’t happen. That said, I’ll still tilt at the windmill of Liberty and believe in the Constitution and the possibilities it offers, should we only choose to follow it.

    As I read those ‘Facts’ I found myself nodding in acknowledgment, as they so eloquently summed up not just the distant past but the more recent past, the antics of our government from 2000 to 2008. Again we had acquiesced to a government that treated us shabbily. Are we poised yet again to acquiesce?

    The faces may change but the behavior never does, whether Democratic or Republican. They are the same side of the same coin, just from different perspectives.

    Though oft repeated in reverent tones, we should not forget that when it was written, “All men are created equal” referred only to land-owning white men. Non-whites (blacks especially) and women need not apply. But gradually a more enlightened society, one that would not abide hypocrisy, prevailed. Then the wheel of prejudice turned ’round again, this time stopping on homophobia and religious zealotry. And once again, “All men are created equal” refers in spirit to just a select group, this time heterosexual Christians only. Gays and non-Christians need not apply.

    When will we finally grow weary of our national hypocrisy?

    We *have* had too many scandals and too much corruption–by the Republican and Democratic parties. Strengthening, requiring background checks for gun purchases does not violate the 2nd Amendment. A 7-year-old boy or girl cannot walk into a gun shop and buy a handgun, yet there are no cries that we are violating their constitutional rights. Nowhere in the 2nd Amendment does it state an age at which one can buy a gun or that we cannot implement or tighten background checks. But rational citizens would agree that a 7 year old or someone mentally unstable is not responsible enough to own a gun, would be a threat to society.

    Attacks on free speech? Where? Daily I can read any newspaper, watch any news channel, and find someone condemning Congress or the president. The accusers don’t suddenly disappear from society never to be heard from again. Fox News seems to exist solely to criticize Democrats generally. I don’t see the government threatening to shut them down. So again, where is the attack on free speech?

    Attacks on our faith? It IS true that some conservatives publicly stated Mormonism is “a cult.” Ironically, these “attacks” on religion tend to come from the overzealous, those who want to dictate to the nation what faiths are “authentic,” what and how people should worship, would legislate morality and ethics for the nation if only they could. Are the same people who insist we are a Christian nation when our own Constitution never mentions one god we ALL must worship and believe in, intentionally made the Constitution a secular document. It would seem the very people who insist freedom of religion is under attack are the ones doing the attacking!

    We DO need to protect liberty. We DO need to fight against tyranny.

    But the very people speaking of liberty and tyranny are the ones who act tyrannically, trying to define for all citizens what they should believe in, what religions are legitimate, what values and morals all Americans should have.

    THAT is what I would call “soft tyranny.”
